Jungle people. What a curious crowd. One could imagine that their common interest, which drove them as far as packing up all their belongings to move into the rainforest, would make a convenient denominator for establishing a homogenous community. But no. Not even close. The people are divided as in no other place I've ever been. You think of a believe system that you've encountered anywhere else in the world and there would be at least one individual here supporting it. And it's not even that many peopleā€¦ Some of them, it seems, came here to escape their former lives. They indulge in the anonymity that this place offers, with its sparse population and distant neighbours, to become one with nature once again, only to discover that their former thought patterns and habits followed them here and now they are left alone to deal with them. So, in the absence of any kind of psychological support system, either social or governmental, they escape into the sweet numbness of various narcotics. The complete opposite type is looking for freedom and absence of control and regulations in comparison to their seasonal Sydney residence. They arrive during the more convenient dry season and literally strip at the doorstep of their improvised holiday homes. Still wary of the occasional confused tourist they choose the most remote properties to feel free, walking naked between tall palms and taking a dip in their local swimming holes. The majority of residents though flee their lives as outsiders in the overcrowded modern world, looking for a place to fit in, where their untraditional behaviours are accepted as they are, where their love for nature is not considered inhuman, and where their distaste of the government finds common ground. For that reason, one finds at least one conspiracy theory here per person but also an amazed sparkle in everyone's eyes when talking about the beauty of nature around us. However, independently, of what they think and what they do, they are all survivors, battling the challenges that the rainforest throws at them every day and celebrating each small victory, contradicting as it is for a community that wants to be one with nature.
